ASL Courses: for the Outdoors

CorpsTHAT offers virtual ASL courses for for individuals and organizations to communicate with Deaf people while working, recreating or volunteering in the outdoor field. Courses meet on zoom, with a maximum of 8 students and are taught by native Deaf ASL signers who has extensive experience in the outdoors. Along with basic vocabulary and grammar, students will learn an introduction to Deaf culture and etiquette tailored to outdoor settings.

ASL Level 1

For students who have little to no previous knowledge of ASL. Students will learn basic conversational skills and vocabulary. In this class, you’ll learn how to communicate with Deaf people while working, recreating, or volunteering in the outdoor field.

ASL Level 2

Students will refine their use of basic sentence types and practice their skills through interactions. By the end of this course, students will be able to confidently carry on conversations on topics that are commonly discussed in the outdoors, develop a more advanced understanding of ASL grammar and syntax, Deaf culture and etiquette tailored to outdoor settings.

ASL Level 3

For students who have already taken our ASL I and ASL II courses, or have a basic knowledge of ASL vocabulary and grammar and are ready expand their skills in conversation. By the end of this course, students will be able to confidently have a conversation about general outdoor topics and communicate important points in topics such as wilderness medicine.

Shirley Ann Shannon

ASL Coordinator and Instructor

Shirley Ann was raised and resides in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. She has been teaching ASL classes with CorpsTHAT since 2020. Graduated at Gallaudet University in 2017 with a major in Communication Studies, she enjoys traveling, being outside with nature and teaching classes to be more inclusive in the environment!

Zoé Rodriguez

ASL Instructor

Zoe Marie was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Gallaudet University in 2017. She also earned a Master of Arts in Sign Language Education from Gallaudet University in 2022. Zoe is adventurous and enjoys going on hikes, bike rides, dog walks, and relax in the beach. Zoe enjoyed working with Youth Leadership Camp at Oregon for three summers and that made her fall in love with outdoors. Her inspiration is being a Sign Language Instructor, since she finds it admirable when people are inclusive and able to communicate with those who are deaf.
