Since August 2021\, I’ve been currently working as a Long-Term Paraprofessional Aide for the middle school department at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School in Washington\, DC. I graduated with a graduate certificate from Colorado State University\, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Arizona. Both degrees focused on land\, people\, and wildlife conservation and management and wildlife biology.  My life has always been surrounded by wildlife and being outdoors. In fact\, I studied abroad and lived among the African tribes in Namibia. My lifelong goal is to be a biologist and work in wildlife education.  I love learning and adapting to new opportunities. \nVanessa is an American Conservation Experience alumni. \n\n  \n \nJojo (Joseph) Lopez \nJoseph Lopez aka “JoJo” born and raised in Riverside\, California.  California School for the Deaf Riverside(2004) and Gallaudet University(2010/2017) Alumni. SUMMARY:Sol Fest: Gear Repair Meetup
DESCRIPTION:This in person\, hands-on meetup is for anyone who wants to learn the basics of outdoor gear maintenance. We all know how expensive outdoor gear can be and how much we beat it up when we are having fun in the outdoors. When something breaks\, we know you can’t always go out and buy another expensive one\, hence\, why we are introducing a gear maintenance workshop through CorpsTHAT. \nBring your own gear and learn how to fix it yourself with Deaf gear experts and tools on site to teach you and guide you in fixing it yourself\, or watch one of our demos on our own broken gear. We will cover how to fix a punctured sleeping pad\, a rip in your puffy jacket\, broken zippers\, ripped tent and the cleaning and upkeep of water filtration system or cooking stove. \nDon’t know ASL? That’s ok! We will have ASL interpreters at all Sol Fest events thanks to a sponsorship by Trail Blazing Interpreters. CorpsTHAT thanks the Washington\, DC Arc’teryx store for providing the tools for participants to use and for sponsoring this event. \nPlease RSVP so that we can have an estimate for how many people to expect.

SUMMARY:Sol Fest: Hike Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Fundraising for Sol Fest and want to get your miles in? Or just want to get out and try a new hike in the DC area? Come join us for this 4 mile hike at Burnt Mills East Special Park. \n  \nThere is a small parking lot at the park so please consider carpooling.  To carpool\, meet us at Streetcar 82 at 10am and we will caravan to the trailhead at 10:30am. Hiking starts at 11am. The hike is 4 miles round trip and at the start of the trail there is some incline with large boulders and smaller rocks in the trail to navigate over in the first mile\, after\, the trail is relatively flat and only the occasional smaller rock in the trail. The trail is out and back. After the hike we will all return to Streetcar 82 to enjoy some good brews. \n  \nWe are limiting this hike to only 20 people due to group size on trail.  Please register and let us know if you are unable to make it. The night before the event we will email you with more instructions about weather\, hiking tips and meeting details. \n  \nDon’t know ASL? That’s ok! We will have ASL interpreters at all Sol Fest events thanks to a sponsorship by Trail Blazing Interpreters.

SUMMARY:Moving Deafly Forward: A Look at Inclusion in the Outdoor Industry
DESCRIPTION:Date: November 18th\, 8pm to 9pm EST \n  \nJoin CorpsTHAT’s panel discussing how the outdoor industry can be more inclusive to Deaf folks. We will have several different panelists who have participated in different outdoor programming\, including but not limited to National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)\, Outward Bound\, Greenfield Community College’s Outdoor Leadership Program.  \n  \nDuring the one-hour-long panel discussion\, we will be discussing the following topics:  \n  \n-Our experiences of being the only Deaf person on all hearing expeditions\,  \n– How risk management could look at Deaf gain as a positive influence for the industry\, \n– Technology and equipment modification and additions\,  \n-The benefits of doing an all Deaf expedition with Deaf instructors\, and more. \n  \nPanelists Bios: \n  \n \nLauren Sprague has always had an avid connection with nature ever since she was little. She loves to hike\, rock climb\, and go on any outdoor adventure. Lauren was on a week-long Outward Bound sailing trip when she was 15 years old. Back in 2015\, she did the Outdoor Leadership Program at GreenField Community College (Greenfield\, MA). She currently works with the land in Northern California for three years.  \n  \n \nAnthony DeMare is a lifelong outdoor and environmental enthusiast\, as well as a lover of stories and jokes.  He has been camping and hiking with his family since his Boy Scout days.  He currently holds two degrees: a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Team Building from Gallaudet University\, and a Master’s degree in Outdoor and Environmental Education from Alaska Pacific University.  His interests include hiking\, backpacking\, rock climbing\, and reading.   \nHe has four NOLS experiences under his belt\, including a 28 day backpacking trip in the Talkeenta Mountains of Alaska\, and a summer internship on the NOLS Alaska branch.  His thesis focused on identifying barriers for Deaf access to the outdoors.  One of his other writings\, a feedback article to NOLS outlining different ways to work with deaf people\, was published in a 2018 NOLS staff newsletter.  His current goals include: climb a 14K peak\, continue to foster Deaf access to the outdoors\, and transition more fully into Outdoor Education as a career.   \n  \n \nJessie “Rupert” Dubler: Studied Environmental Policy in college\, Certified Wilderness First Responder (WFR-expired)\, participated in an extended NOLS Alaska backcountry expedition\, and still turns to the great outdoors for renewal. A father and freelances as a CDI based out of Maryland in his spare time. \n  \nThanks to REI for sponsoring the interpreting services for this webinar. \n \n
