SUMMARY:Conservation Corps Alumni Panel
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking to do something different\, something memorable\, or a life changing experience this summer? Have you always been intrigued by the conservation corps? Do you want an excuse to be in the mountains all summer? If you’ve answered yes to all the above or just want to learn more about the conservation corps experience\, RSVP to our third virtual panel of conservation corps alumni. These alumni will share their experiences working in the conservation corps. You will get the chance to ask questions and receive guidance on how to apply to work with the conservation corps and what career path options there are for after the corps experience. \nJob seekers\, VR/Transition Counselors\, Educators\, Parents\, and Community members welcomed to attend. After this panel\, we will be sharing details about our CorpsTHAT Conservation Crew as well as other programs throughout the country this summer. \n\nModerator:\nDakota (Dak) Ronco\nthey/them/theirs\n I grew up in California with a childhood of hiking and backpacking. Thinking about the environment and our relationship with nature as humans has become intuitive. I interned with CorpsTHAT in 2021\, which led me to a seasonal job with USFS in Idaho with a logging trail crew in the backcountry. Once I had a taste of a career outdoors\, I knew this is what I wanted out of my life in the long run. I worked with CorpsTHAT again in the summer of 2033 as a crew leader in Vermont. Their maple syrup is champ\, hot dog dry! I am working at Model Secondary School for the Deaf at the moment while figuring out my next plans. You can almost always find me outside on my breaks and free time 🙂 \n  \n  \n  \nPanelists: \nLily Molina AKA “S.O.” (Safety Officer\, trail nickname) \n (she/her) \n \nI had the honor and privilege to serve on the PA Outdoors Corps as Crew Leader alongside the BEST co-Leader\, copilot Sarah Joiner in summer of 2023\, both sessions totaling 6 weeks not counting training. I am currently set to graduate with English Literature BA May 2024 from California State University.  \nAt Raccoon Creek we built a new segment of the trail spanning 400 feet to reroute the slippery water damaged\, switching to switchbacks (pun intended) on Heritage Trail . The 2nd Session was at Cook Forest (one of the most beautiful places)\, we built not one\, but two drainage dips\, carrying rocks gravels up a 12 percent grade for 1/2 mile or so\, then back down to gather more rocks/gravel\, the fastest way to become stronger I have experienced and digging shovels into the mud was the fun part and a quick way to cool down. Seneca Trail at Cook Forest. We achieved the project goal which was making the hiking trails safer so people can enjoy the outdoors without falling down the cliff into Clarion River and we were called by the SCA. “SBM crew” Small But Mighty with only two crew members. We had help from wonderful people\, Adult Roving crew at SCA\, North country trail volunteers\, and SCA Staff themselves.  \n  \n  \n \n  \nMy name is Mujahid Zafar and I use He/ him/ his pronouns. \nIn 2022 I served for the Conservation Corps of Minnesota and Iowa (CCMI)’s Summer Youth Corps. For 4 weeks I served with the ASL crew. Each week we worked in a different state/ regional park on various projects related to introduced plant species and trail management. I am currently reading and learning from indigenous literature as well as Islamic text. I plan to resume university studies in the fall pursuing a conservation biology degree. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \nAlyssa (Aly) Glennon: She/her \nI was part of the 004 crew as a crew member in Summer 2023 that took place in Vermont. We stayed in Green Mountain National Forest for five weeks\, and it was the most memorable moment in my life and it was eye-opening. Mostly we focused on pulling out the invasive plants\, maintaining trail work\, restoring things that are needed. Not only that\, I learned a lot of survival skills which will apply to my life from now on. I’m currently going on my 6th semester at Gallaudet University\, majoring in Business Administration. I’d love for my career in the future to have a blend of both business and the outdoors. \n  \n  \n  \n \nTanner Fenton: he/him \n\n\nMy name is Tanner Fenton. I worked as a crew member with CCMI Summer Youth Corps during the summer of 2021 and Summer Youth Corps Wilderness Crew at Isle Royale National Park in summer of 2022 and 2023\, I am now serving for AmeriCorps NCCC in El Paso\, TX. I do remember what I learned. I would use most of the skills that I learned by helping with my family with the yard work and serving at AmeriCorps NCCC. My favorite thing about being crew members is being able to connect with my crew.\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nInterpreters from Trail Blazing Interpreting Agency  will be provided for this webinar and are sponsored by Conservation Corps of Minnesota Summer Youth Program \n  \n  \nRSVP using the google form to get zoom link access! We hope to see you there. \nLoading…

My name is Jax\, I was\n\n born and raised in Riverside and Orange\, California until sixteen years old\, I moved across the country to live in Washington D.C.\, and have been living on the East Coast ever since. I am currently working as a paraprofessional at Maryland School for the Deaf. \nIn the summer of 2023\, I was one of CorpsTHAT’s crew leaders and led an incredible crew in Vermont for five weeks! We mostly focused on habitat restoration: removing non-native invasive plants\, constructing the trails\, maintaining fields\, facilities\, and campgrounds. During the strenuous labor and living in the remote area has opened my eyes and transformed my values blossoming my mind\, body\, and spirit\, which made me connect to the wilderness even more. Not only connect to the wild but also connect with the crew to create memories together\, which was a reward. I’m eternally grateful for experiencing this once-a-lifetime trip. \nI thought I had camping knowledge because I had attended several deaf camps during my childhood era but being exposed to the conservation program for the first time which was completely different from other camps. It shifted my understanding of the definition of a true wilderness camping experience which I absolutely love it. I wish I had known about this a bit earlier but it is not too late for you! \n\n  \n\nInterpreters from Trail Blazing Interpreting Agency  will be provided for this webinar and are sponsored by Conservation Corps of Minnesota Summer Youth Program \nRSVP by filling out this google form to get zoom link access! SUMMARY:USDA - Forest Service Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to work for the U.S. Forest Service or for the U.S. Department of Agriculture\, but don’t know where to start? \n  \nCome and meet Kate Day and Gretchen Smith\, who both are Deaf and work for the USDA. Katie began her federal career in 2012 at Rocky Mountain National Park and has since worked at Denali\, Crater Lake\, and Golden Gate National Recreation Area. She has served as a campground Supervisor\, Education Specialist\, Fee Manager/Program Analyst and Business and Revenue Fee Specialist. Katie has worked with campground reservation systems\, backcountry permits\, and lotteries throughout her career and looks forward to expanding her knowledge of these systems with the R1S team. In her spare time\, Katie enjoys backpacking\, hiking\, swimming\, skijoring\, bikejoring and hanging out with her three dogs Kasey\, Kepler\, and Tika. \nGreta Smith\, US Forest Service\, District Ranger – Workforce Entry Team \nGreta Smith serves as a district ranger for a national hiring team. Greta started out as a dishwasher in a restaurant in 1998; along the way\, they worked a variety of private sector and public sector jobs before landing a permanent federal position in 2010.  Most of Greta’s permanent career prior to 2015 was with the Army Corps of Engineers as an environmental planner. During college\, they volunteered in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and worked as seasonal wilderness rangers for the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Those two experiences cemented their desire to work for an agency that shared their core values of service to others and land stewardship so\, in 2015\, Greta switched to the Forest Service as an environmental coordinator. She has grown along the way and has worked for various Forests in Oregon and Washington. When not working\, Greta is out on their mountain bike or out on the water with their husband and pup. \n  \nASL Interpreters will be provided at the event. \n  \nJoin us at the link here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82998425010?pwd=MjNNQXdNK0FycmdYWjVrOVRIVFhRdz09 \n  \n

Whenever I visit the Natural Park\, I love to hike\, and I see all the beautiful parks within the park. \nAmeriCorps Programs that Joline has served: Internship Placement (IP) with San Antonio Missions National Historical Park \n  \n \nDahlia Davis: She/her (Panelist) \nHello! My name is Dahlia Davis (she/her) and I grew up mostly in Plainfield\, Illinois. I just graduated in May 2023 with my bachelor’s in Linguistics and East Asian Studies in which I focused on translation\, global security\, and the history of Korean Sign Language. I am currently residing in Seoul\, South Korea pursuing my master’s in Korean Unification Studies at Yonsei University. Throughout my undergraduate career I had the opportunity to travel all around the world\, and decided that I would continue that exploration by serving in the Conservation Corps Minnesota & Iowa for their 2023 Summer Youth Corps! I was selected through training to serve at Isle Royale National Park as an ASL Crew Leader for an experienced all-Deaf crew. I had a life-changing experience on the island fostering my leadership and team collaboration skills\, and am now actively keeping up with the conservation world. Motivated by my summer work outdoors\, one of my goals here in Seoul is to hike up Ansan Mountain\, a beautiful nature preservation and hiking area right behind my university. I look forward to being more active in the Deaf and hard of hearing space and always encourage adventure! \nAmeriCorps Programs that Dahlia has served: Conservation Corps Minnesota (CCM) \n  \n \nAmelia Dall – She/her (Panelist) \nAmelia Dall is a deaf archaeologist currently working professionally for the federal government\, Bureau of Reclamation\, in Pueblo\, CO.  \nShe served as an AmeriCorps VISTA for a year (2013-2014) in Wenatchee\, Washington working as a Gang Prevention Coordinator for a youth coalition program. \nShe holds a Master of Arts in Archaeology from Texas State University (‘17)\, a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Gallaudet University (‘13)\, and has two Geographic Information Systems Certificates from Front Range Community College (‘22).  \nAmelia is also on the board of Colorado Association of the Deaf and Archaeological Institute of America – Denver Chapter. Her long term personal project is to gather resources on archaeological research regarding Deaf People in Ancient History. \nAmeriCorps Programs that Amelia has served: AmeriCorps VISTA \n  \n \nTaylor Nyugen – She/her (Panelist) \nHello there! I’m Taylor Nguyen\, hailing from the beautiful state of Missouri. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance! I served in the AmeriCorps program during the summer of 2023. I was involved in a project focused on conservation\, field research\, land management\, and historical preservation from June 5th to August 12th\, 2023. During this time\, I had the opportunity to contribute to important work in preserving our natural and historical heritage. Currently\, I am a senior majoring in biology. I am passionate about the sciences and have a strong interest in pursuing a career in dentistry. I plan to attend dental school in the near future to further my education and training in this field. In addition to my academic pursuits\, I am committed to giving back to the community and continuing my involvement in conservation efforts. I am exploring opportunities to volunteer part-time with the National Park Service\, where I can combine my love of nature and my dedication to preserving our national treasures. I am excited about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead\, both in my academic journey and in my commitment to making a positive impact on the environment and historical preservation. \nAmeriCorps Programs that Taylor has served: Internship Placement (IP) with San Antonio Missions National Historical Park \n
