SUMMARY:USDA - Forest Service Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to work for the U.S. Forest Service or for the U.S. Department of Agriculture\, but don’t know where to start? \n  \nCome and meet Kate Day and Gretchen Smith\, who both are Deaf and work for the USDA. They will explain how to apply\, tips on getting a Schedule A\, what are GS tiers\, and much more information about the USDA. \nKatie Day\, USFS\, Permit and Lottery Manager – Denver\, Colorado \n As a Permit Manager for Recreation.gov\, Katie acts as a consultant and liaison to sites that wish to bring in their federally permitted locations to the online world of Recreation.gov. Katie began her federal career in 2012 at Rocky Mountain National Park and has since worked at Denali\, Crater Lake\, and Golden Gate National Recreation Area. She has served as a campground Supervisor\, Education Specialist\, Fee Manager/Program Analyst and Business and Revenue Fee Specialist. Katie has worked with campground reservation systems\, backcountry permits\, and lotteries throughout her career and looks forward to expanding her knowledge of these systems with the R1S team. In her spare time\, Katie enjoys backpacking\, hiking\, swimming\, skijoring\, bikejoring and hanging out with her three dogs Kasey\, Kepler\, and Tika. \nGreta Smith\, US Forest Service\, District Ranger – Workforce Entry Team \nGreta Smith serves as a district ranger for a national hiring team. Greta started out as a dishwasher in a restaurant in 1998; along the way\, they worked a variety of private sector and public sector jobs before landing a permanent federal position in 2010.  Most of Greta’s permanent career prior to 2015 was with the Army Corps of Engineers as an environmental planner. During college\, they volunteered in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and worked as seasonal wilderness rangers for the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Those two experiences cemented their desire to work for an agency that shared their core values of service to others and land stewardship so\, in 2015\, Greta switched to the Forest Service as an environmental coordinator. She has grown along the way and has worked for various Forests in Oregon and Washington. When not working\, Greta is out on their mountain bike or out on the water with their husband and pup. \n  \nASL Interpreters will be provided at the event. \n  \nJoin us at the link here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82998425010?pwd=MjNNQXdNK0FycmdYWjVrOVRIVFhRdz09 \n  \n

It is the beginning of a new chapter in my life journey and last summer\, I worked in Texas (SAAN) for an internship. The things that I enjoy doing are reading manga\, webtoons with anything\, riding a bike\, making art\, playing video games\, and dreaming about story during nap time. Whenever I visit the Natural Park\, I love to hike\, and I see all the beautiful parks within the park. \nAmeriCorps Programs that Joline has served: Internship Placement (IP) with San Antonio Missions National Historical Park \n  \n \nDahlia Davis: She/her (Panelist) \nHello! My name is Dahlia Davis (she/her) and I grew up mostly in Plainfield\, Illinois. I just graduated in May 2023 with my bachelor’s in Linguistics and East Asian Studies in which I focused on translation\, global security\, and the history of Korean Sign Language. I am currently residing in Seoul\, South Korea pursuing my master’s in Korean Unification Studies at Yonsei University. Throughout my undergraduate career I had the opportunity to travel all around the world\, and decided that I would continue that exploration by serving in the Conservation Corps Minnesota & Iowa for their 2023 Summer Youth Corps! I was selected through training to serve at Isle Royale National Park as an ASL Crew Leader for an experienced all-Deaf crew. I had a life-changing experience on the island fostering my leadership and team collaboration skills\, and am now actively keeping up with the conservation world. Motivated by my summer work outdoors\, one of my goals here in Seoul is to hike up Ansan Mountain\, a beautiful nature preservation and hiking area right behind my university. I look forward to being more active in the Deaf and hard of hearing space and always encourage adventure! \nAmeriCorps Programs that Dahlia has served: Conservation Corps Minnesota (CCM) \n  \n \nAmelia Dall – She/her (Panelist) \nAmelia Dall is a deaf archaeologist currently working professionally for the federal government\, Bureau of Reclamation\, in Pueblo\, CO.  \nShe served as an AmeriCorps VISTA for a year (2013-2014) in Wenatchee\, Washington working as a Gang Prevention Coordinator for a youth coalition program. \nShe holds a Master of Arts in Archaeology from Texas State University (‘17)\, a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Gallaudet University (‘13)\, and has two Geographic Information Systems Certificates from Front Range Community College (‘22).  \nAmelia is also on the board of Colorado Association of the Deaf and Archaeological Institute of America – Denver Chapter. Her long term personal project is to gather resources on archaeological research regarding Deaf People in Ancient History. \nAmeriCorps Programs that Amelia has served: AmeriCorps VISTA \n  \n \nTaylor Nyugen – She/her (Panelist) \nHello there! I’m Taylor Nguyen\, hailing from the beautiful state of Missouri. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance! I served in the AmeriCorps program during the summer of 2023. I was involved in a project focused on conservation\, field research\, land management\, and historical preservation from June 5th to August 12th\, 2023. During this time\, I had the opportunity to contribute to important work in preserving our natural and historical heritage. Currently\, I am a senior majoring in biology. I am passionate about the sciences and have a strong interest in pursuing a career in dentistry. I plan to attend dental school in the near future to further my education and training in this field. In addition to my academic pursuits\, I am committed to giving back to the community and continuing my involvement in conservation efforts. I am exploring opportunities to volunteer part-time with the National Park Service\, where I can combine my love of nature and my dedication to preserving our national treasures. I am excited about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead\, both in my academic journey and in my commitment to making a positive impact on the environment and historical preservation. \nAmeriCorps Programs that Taylor has served: Internship Placement (IP) with San Antonio Missions National Historical Park \n

After this panel\, we will be sharing details about our CorpsTHAT Conservation Crew as well as other programs throughout the country this summer. \n\nPanelists:\nMara Land [they/them]- CorpsTHAT & CCM \nI was a crew member for CorpsTHAT‘s first conservation crew the summer of 2021. I quickly fell in love with my crew and the job. The summer of 2022 I decided to work as a crew leader for Conservation Corp Minnesota & Iowa (CCMI) on their ASL wilderness crew\, where myself and my two co-leaders led our five youth members on Isle Royale National Park for five weeks. I plan to work again as a crew leader or operations coordinator for CCMI again this summer. I am currently a junior at Gallaudet majoring in Communications Studies\, and when I’m not doing homework or working as a tutor\, I’m outdoors exploring DC. I plan to use my degree in communications to further my career in conservation\, as this has become one of my biggest passions. \n \n  \nAnkita Gopal [she/her]- CorpsTHAT  \nMy name is Ankita Gopal. I worked as a crew member with CorpsTHAT during the summer of 2022 in Texas. I am now a Gallaudet university student majoring in Risk Management and Insurance. I do remember what I learned. I would use most of the skills that I learned by teaching my dad and especially my brothers who are still young and love being outdoors special in the summer. My favorite thing about being crew members is when we cut down bamboo trees. \nMaria Stull Escobar [she/her]- CorpsTHAT & SWCC \nMy name is Maria Stull Escobar and I am 24 years old. I worked as a crew leader with Karina Baker during the summer of 2022 in Vermont. After working with CorpsTHAT\, they inspired me to branch out and work with another conservation organization- Southwest Conservation Corps in NM and CO for the fall season of 2022. I am currently working as an outdoor educator intern at Visiting Students Program at Hawthorne Valley for next 5 months! \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nIvy Chow [she/her]- SECC \nMy name is Ivy Chow. I am from Boston\, MA\, born and raised. I am very curious\, fun to be around and enjoy going on adventures whenever the opportunity is out there. take advantage of it. Feel free to ask me if you have any questions and I am happy to answer. I was involved with the Southeast Conservation Corps (SECC) in Chattanooga\, TN – ASLi in 2021 in both sessions\, 3 weeks each. I’m currently working at Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HMSD) where I graduated back then in 2017. I’m working as a paraprofessional\, a head coach of a girls basketball team\, 2 sides of part-time jobs. I still plan to take the EMS courses that are upcoming soon. \nKarina Baker [she/her]- CorpsTHAT \nLike many of the passionate change-makers in CorpsTHAT\, Karina is an avid environmentalist and a lover of the outdoors. She grew up hiking and camping in Catalina Island\, Leo Carrillo State Beach\, and many other areas that warm her heart to this day. Her experiences ignited a passion for preserving green spaces for all inhabitants on Earth to enjoy. In the Summer of 2022\, Karina joined CorpsTHAT as a Crew Leader for their Vermont project. She is finishing up her Master’s degrees in Public Administration and International Development with a specialization in environmental justice. To fulfill the final requirements of her degrees\, Karina is currently interning in Viet Nam with PARD\, supporting the capacity building of the local Deaf community and spreading awareness about environmental issues. \n  \n  \n\nRSVP at the bottom of this page to get zoom link access! We hope to see you there. \nInterpreters from Trail Blazing Interpreting Agency  will be provided for this webinar and are sponsored by Conservation Corps of Minnesota Summer Youth Program
